The Insurance Authority (IA) began a systematic study of health insurance last year to ensure fairness for policyholders and business sustainability, according to Ming Pao. Clement Lau, Executive Director, Policy and Legislation, at IA, said that the data classification and models provided by insurance companies at the moment are not uniform, affecting data usability and making direct comparisons difficult, therefore a comprehensive data integration will be completed this year.

Recommendations will be made to insurance companies and relevant government departments regarding mainstream health insurance products such as Voluntary Health Insurance Scheme (VHIS). Consideration will also be given to making some data available to the industry and the public to facilitate consumer choice.
