HKEX (00388.HK) CEO Bonnie Chan wrote a blogpost, opining that it is critical to be resilient during times of wide-ranging change. HKEX should have the ability to adapt under stress, anticipate shifts and capture opportunities. On the subject of capturing opportunities, Chan laid out four areas of focus for HKEX.

Firstly, HKEX will continue to capitalize on its unique advantage of "connecting China with the world" against the backdrop of China's current economic restructuring. HKEX can leverage its advantages to provide financing support for the country's economic development, help domestic investors diversify their asset allocation, provide more choices and convenience for global investors to invest in China's market, while promoting the progress of RMB internationalization.

Secondly, efforts will be made to enhance the liquidity and vitality of the Hong Kong market in an increasingly complex international environment. In an international environment characterized by intensified competition and turbulence, customers are demanding greater diversity in products and services. The HKEX will continue to optimize the listing regime to make the IPO market more diversified and vibrant. At the same time, the HKEX should enhance the market infrastructure and continue to enrich asset classes and product types to facilitate investors to better manage their asset portfolios and hedge their risks.

The third focus is on emerging business areas, such as the carbon market and data business. In addition to traditional exchange business such as trading and clearing of stocks, bonds and derivatives, there are also tremendous opportunities in emerging business areas such as carbon market, ESG products and data analytics. The HKEX hopes to expand into emerging business areas while retaining its edge in traditional businesses, so that it can provide one-stop services to market participants and create synergies between different businesses.

The fourth key point is technology empowerment. Chan said in her blog that HKEX has the technological strength and experience to groom its own platforms and solutions: from the paperless reform of the listing process to the launch of the IPO clearing platform FINI, from the OTP-C system for its cash market to LME Select for LME’s derivatives market and today’s announcement of the Orion Derivatives Platform (ODP) development project. In Chan's view, technology is key to helping HKEX remain resilient.
